Research Project: Excessive Body Weight and Ovarian Cancer Team
Carrie House, PhD
Co-Leader, Research Project: Excessive Body Weight and Ovarian Cancer
Dr. Carrie House is an Assistant Professor of Biology at SDSU. Her graduate and doctoral degrees in biology and molecular medicine have led to her research focus on improving outcomes for cancer patients. Dr. House studies molecular signaling mechanisms that support cancer cell characteristics, including drug resistance. Her career goal is to identify novel mechanisms of cancer progression and discover new strategies to prevent cancer recurrence in vulnerable populations. She also is the Co-Leader of the Research Project: Excessive Body Weight and Ovarian Cancer at the SDSU HealthLINK Center.
See Dr. House’s profile for details on publications and projects.
Tom Huxford, PhD
Co-Leader, Research Project: Excessive Body Weight and Ovarian Cancer
Dr. Tom Huxford is a Professor of Biochemistry at SDSU. His research focuses on understanding detailed chemical mechanisms of important cellular factors. He is making significant progress in understanding activation and regulation of NF-κB, a protein complex that controls expression of cell survival genes in response to diverse environmental signals. Although a proper NF-κB response is integral to a cell’s ability to fight off infection and respond to stress, too much can lead to chronic inflammation and promote tumor formation and growth. Dr. Huxford also is the Co-Leader of the Research Project: Excessive Body Weight and Ovarian Cancer at the SDSU HealthLINK Center.

Mikella Robinson, PhD
Lab Technician, Research Project: Excessive Body Weight and Ovarian Cancer
Dr. Mikella Robinson is the Lab Technician assisting the Research Project: Excessive Body Weight and Ovarian Cancer at the SDSU HealthLINK Center. She leads the vivarium research projects, runs basic lab experiments and bioinformatic analyses, mentors students, and coordinates new studies.
See Dr. Robinson’s profile for details on publications and projects.
Ryne Holmberg
Graduate Research Assistant, Research Project: Excessive Body Weight and Ovarian Cancer
Mr. Ryne Holmberg is a Graduate Research Assistant assisting the Research Project: Excessive Body Weight and Ovarian Cancer at the SDSU HealthLINK Center. He is investigating the role of obesity-related factors on the NF-κB signaling pathway in ovarian cancer. The focus of the research is on differential activation of the canonical and non-canonical NF-κB pathways and their effects on TIC formation and chemo resistance.
