Scientist in Residence Program 2026-2027

In collaboration with Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD), and the Laura Rodriguez Research Institute, the HealthLINK Community Engagement Core announces The Scientist in Residence Program. One tenured/tenure-track faculty member from the SDSU College of Health and Human Services will be awarded a 1-semester course release during the 2026-2027 academic year* to work directly with a clinician scientist at FHCSD to develop ideas for collaborative research in an area of mutual interest that meets the mission of FHCSD and the Laura Rodriguez Research Institute.


The course release will be used to support embedded time for the faculty member at FHCSD to ensure that proposed research serves the needs of patients, healthcare leaders and clinicians, while simultaneously maintaining a level of rigor required for advancement in academia.

The scope of work for the Scientist in Residence Program will be established in collaboration with FHCSD and the HealthLINK CEC, and will include:

  • Onboarding as a volunteer at FHCSD.
  • Regular meetings with the FHCSD clinician scientist and HealthLINK CEC.
  • Clinic/program observation or on-site trainings specific to research/clinical area.
  • Development of a plan for collaborative research.
  • Conducting a review of FHCSD EHR for development of a research proposal.
  • A culminating product tailored and dependent on the scope of work.

Eligible faculty members will meet with the FHCSD-HealthLINK CEC team, who will select a final candidate for the position based on alignment of research priorities and potential for future funding.
